Crucial moments that reflect Susana Esteban’s passion for wine
Susana Esteban is recognized for constantly being one step ahead in oenology, with a career marked by distinctions and innovations that reflect her talent and dedication to the art of creating extraordinary wines. Among the most emblematic moments of his career are:
Old, dryland vineyards in Alentejo, preferably in the Serra de São Mamede – this is Susana Esteban’s starting point. Susana makes a point of looking for the best ones, which are almost perfect, so that she has to intervene as little as possible. She is a staunch defender of “wine that is made in the vineyard and not in the cellar”. This is what drives it: the incessant search for the best old vineyards with dry Portuguese grape varieties, planted at altitude, in areas of granite and shale and with wide temperature ranges, because it is this combination of factors that allows slow maturation, essential in its wines.
The identification of grape varieties is not the most important thing for Susana Esteban, but rather their quality. He cannot guarantee it, but he believes that in white people there is:
Arinto, Roupeiro, Viozinho and Fernão Pires. And the red varieties include: Trincadeira, Rufete, Grand Noir, Alicante Bouschet and Aragonez.
And it is precisely from his passion for old vines that the Alegrete 1375 Club emerged, created in partnership with his friend António Menano. Only those who are part of the club have access to the 1375 bottles of white and 1375 of red, available only to 200 members, who will be the first to receive the news and have access to meetings/tastings with Susana Esteban.
